The story

mentana_3

The construction of the first convent of the Capuchin friars of Lazio has the intention to meet the needs of the hospitality of the many religious pilgrims in 1600 and passing on Nomentana to and from Rome and the surrounding shrines. Located on a small hill, the Convent was built very quickly, between 1608 and 1610, among other things, with the remains of Roman material. The consecration was solemnly its November 14, 1610 and was officiated, attracting a large congregation, the Bishop of Sulmona Archbishop Cesare faithful who over the high altar blessed the two side chapels, one dedicated to St. Francis and the other San Michele. Also under the main altar were placed the relics of the body of St. Felicie I, Pope and Martyr. In 1630 just 20 years after its foundation, the Capuchin Order decided, for logistical reasons, to dispose of the Convent, which was purchased by Giovan Battista Borghese, who as early as 1638 after doing some maintenance work him out as a place resort for his family. In 1867 the Convent was seen scene of the memorable battle fought by Mentana Garibaldi against the Franco-Papal Zouaves. Even today, on the walls of the church, you see some graffiti names of French soldiers, hospitalized here.
In 1964 the Convent was purchased, together with the surrounding park, doctor dentist Charles Hector De Vecchis who brought back to its original use: with time and passion has restored the old monastery, and put the garden to life, devoting attention to each detail. Then, as now.
